This tutorial is not the least bit entertaining-- but it is VERY, VERY IMPORTANT if you want to make sure your assignments are readable and your instructor can grade them.  Read through it at least 3 times.  Print it out so you can follow the instructions while preparing your assignment as an attachment.

 1.  The Dropbox as a concept and tool in WebCt.

2.  Why use MicroSoft Word or Wordpad as your word-processor.

3.  How to "SAVE AS" in your word-processor.

4.  How to UPLOAD, then SUBMIT  your assignment.

5.  What to do if you get a Score of "1" on your assignment.

Dropbox:

This is a page in Webct that is tied to the electronic gradebook in Webct. When you send your assignment from this page or location in Webct, it allows you access to your assignment grade, once your instructor has graded it, while also making accessible your cumulative grade point average at any point in the semester.  Assignments sent from the Dropbox page are sent in the form of an attachment.

SAVE AS in MicroSoft Word or Wordpad:

To submit the assignment you have prepared in MicroSoft Word, you then need to SAVE AS.  This is different than just saving a file because it puts a separate file on your hard drive.  This separate file needs to be SAVED AS a "Text only with Line Breaks" document. MSWord is the only word-processor that allows this SAVE AS option so it is sharable across computer platforms.
As an alternative you may use Wordpad (Win 95/98 or NT found under the star menu under Programs then under Accessories).  Please save the file as a xxx.txt or xxx.doc file (where xxx is the name you want to call the file - DO NOT USE A NAME WITH SPACES or other stange characters described below).
Doing this will save the document with a new name so you can distinguish it from the original file.  This is not necessarily easy if you are new to technology.  If your eyes glaze over when you hear that your document has to have a .txt file extension with no more than eight characters in its title, you will probably need help saving your file.  Find a tutor who can sit down with you at your own computer where your assignment word-processed documents are kept and let him or her help you.  A next door neighbor is often a great resource for this.  Ask for help early in the semester.

Uploading and Submitting:

1.  To upload your word-processed completed assignment from the Dropbox tool page, you must choose the assignment file to upload from your hard drive.  This takes place at the Dropbox location.  Look for the two oval shaped buttons, named Student Files and Submit Assignment, on the Dropbox page. There are two buttons because this concept has two steps to complete:

a) uploading from your hard-drive to Webct's server
b) submit from Webct's server into our electronic classroom space where instructor can reach it.

Now click the button on the left that says "Student Files".  The "View/Upload Files For Assignment" screen appears.

2.  Click Upload.  The "Upload File For Assignment" screen appears.

3.  To locate the file, click Browse to open your local computer's browser.
4.  Select the file by clicking on it.  The Upload File For Assignments screen reappears, with the name of the file in the Filename text box.

5.  To upload the file, click Upload.  The View/Upload Files For Assignments screen reappears.

6.  Click the Return to Assignment hyperlink.  The Assignment Instruction screen reappears.

7.  To submit the Assignment, click Submit Assignment.  The Submit Assignment screen appears.  If the instructor has enabled WebCt's email notification feature, you can receive email notification that your assignment was submitted successfully.  Type your email address into the text box.  If your instructor has not enabled the email notification feature, this text box will not appear.

8.  Click Submit Assignment.  A confirmation box appears asking you to confirm the procedure.

9.  Click OK.  The Assignments screen reappears with the message Not Graded appearing in the Status column.  When the assignment has been graded, this message changes to a hyperlink that says Graded and your grade appears in the Grade column.  Click the hyperlink to view your instructor's commments about your work.

Score of  "1"

This is code for your needing to re-Upload and re-Submit your assignment from the Dropbox for that unit.  The score of "1" is not your final grade, so don't take it personally.  A score of "1" is a frequent event and it means you get another chance.  If your score is "1" on an assignment, reread this tutorial and try again.
